It is a great place to stay with many hotels within walking distance. It is also near to many train stations, which means that hotels located elsewhere in the city, including other borroughs or even parts of New Jersey are easily accessible:
Both MTA (NYC subway) and PATH trains run 24 hours a day. It may be possible to find a good deal on a hotel which is very convenient via NYC’s public transportation network. However, double check travel times on Google maps before booking.

NYC is serviced by 3 major airports that are accessible via public transportation: Newark, JFK, and Laguardia. Newark is usually the closest to NYU by car, but JFK is easiest via public transportation.
NYC has one of the lowest crime rates among major cities in the United States. Nonetheless, it is a large metropolitan area, and therefore use the same common sense you would anywhere: try to remain aware and in populated, well-lit areas when traveling alone.
